Title: WAD explorer?
Post by: SoN of a GuN on January 21, 2013, 06:41:47 PM
Hey guys,

To your knowledge, has anyone ever tried putting together some sort of web-based WAD viewer? Internet browsers these days are getting really sophisticated with what they can do, Chrome has some sort of openGL thing that looks about x4 better than Unreal did when it came out in 1997(?). It seems like porting some version of the doom engine (which I believe is open source now?) to a web browser would at least be possible. Maybe there aren't enough old Doom fans left over to see it realized though.

Anyways, I thought it would be really cool to be able to explore some of our old favorites online. Danzig 18 anyone?

Remember when this was what we called a browser?

Ha, yup! Complete with animated Netscape logo too. Nearly forgot about AltaVista though. I still remember when I first heard about Google... back in 2000 I think(???). I went to their site and was really unimpressed with their clown-like logo. "Well, these guys are going nowhere fast..." Gulp.

Actually, to be honest, I still hate the logo. :D

Yeah! Quake 3 arena has a browser version that was fun as hell to play!  www.quakelive.com

I played a bit of zdoom, which isn't browser based but allowed for multiplayer over the interwebs.  Anyone find a browser version yet?
