Title: anyone up for some danzig deathmatch?
Post by: bezerker on March 01, 2021, 07:51:32 PM
Took a little trip down memory lane today and stumbled upon this forum after finding the google group. I'm Rob (aka Bezerker) from the good ole days.

How is everyone's pandemic treating them? Lots of time to get back into gaming and PCs, assuming you can find any of the parts without paying an ebay scalper.

I'm still living in Wisconsin, now in Madison, and have worked in software for the past ~20 years. I've worked at a bunch of startups, with the most wild ride being a five year stint at GitHub. Currently I'm at a non-profit that works to treat and support hypertension health efforts in India and Bangladesh. I guess some of that time spent building pcs, hacking autoexec.bat files, and gaming has paid off =).

I don't game too much anymore, its hard to find time w/ a family and three kids and the joys of homeownership to keep up with. I still play some civ or breath of the wild to relax when I can. Most modern first person shooters don't appeal to me, though there was one recent-ish doom game that looked like a nice throwback to the classic first two.

Anyways, hope y'all are staying healthy and well. I'd be up for trying to organize a classic doom deathmatch session sometime, I know there is zDoom and zDaemon and probably lotsa other options. I've got a sub 10 ms ping now, so it would be fun to put that to use fragging y'all :P.

Sup Bez, long time no hear! I remember sitting in your room listening to Lovefool  ;D

I was super lucky last Fall: I managed to get my hands on a Ryzen 9 5900x, 3080 RTX and a PS5 all from retail shops  ;)

Been in Germany since being stationed here in the Army in 2002, Doom 2016 was the shit but yeah, pretty much everything else is hot garbage in the FPS space.

Currently a network and network security engineer at a large managed cloud services provider that's been expanding like crazy. Despite the year-long quarantine I've been busy as fuck.

Just submitted a bid on a house here so hopefully I, too, will get to experience the joys of home ownership soon.

This forum is unfortunately not too busy. It's something I put together real quick and had Seagal point the DNS name to, but I'm glad it's caught the occasional eye or two over the years :)

Hey guys, I just remembered this forum randomly and was very happy to see that I still have my username / password stored in my password manager. Glad to see there's some life here still :)

I ended up going into computer graphics and had a career in that for 15 years. I've very recently switched to the real estate business where I've made my own investment company and working to scale that. We live in New Hampshire now.

Would love to get a classic doom game going sometime. Last year I actually spent some time going down memory lane and played the first episode of the original game, good times.

I find it humorous that this forum is still running and that Mike still puts in all the work to upgrade, host, and cert the site for SSL for the 2-3 hits per year that it still gets.

Hey all!

So random - I apparently reached the GMAIL label limit and so I was going through my archives and found some old Cyberquest forum stuff.. and here I am... and here you are?!  What are the chances??

I'm glad to see everyone is doing well after all these years (man they fly by!)

I am married now for almost 9 years, and have a 5 year old girl (almost 6) who will be starting kindergarten in less than 2 weeks.   I am still in Wisconsin, living in Mequon here with the fam not too far from where I grew up!   So far we've managed to avoid COVID and have remained healthy, but we have been super careful (our daughter did Virtual 4K Schooling).

I have been with my firm now for just over 21 years, all of which have been in IT (Service Desk Tech, Platform Analyst, Service Desk Team Lead).  As of June of 2021, I've transitioned into the Private Wealth Management business and am a technology connectivity consultant, a new role that gives me the autonomy to solution for known (or not immediately known) gaps in technology for the sector.  So far it's been absolutely great, and I'm in a happier and healthier place.

I'm still insane about the retro hobby, and my collection has gotten to be pretty insane.  If you'd like a trip down memory lane, check it out here: https://1drv.ms/u/s!ArbMcC8Eb2J6gtshYn4vgvG29c5lQA?e=eHfSN4

I'm always down for a deathmatch!

Rob, if I remember correctly - did you go to LaCrosse and live in Drake Hall??  I faintly remember playing half-life on your RivaTNT card (or maybe it was a Riva 128?) - if that's even you?!

Anyways, cheers to the 'good old days' of LAN parties with the BEST CRTs and Pentium processors!

All my best,
Artex (Steve)

All old gamers that managed to find a site to emulate a network over a modem, and we basically ended up in some form of IT.   Go fig  :)

An old friend contacted me just yesterday to mention they remastered the original Quake with new graphics and they're selling it on steam for $10.   They also have deathmatch servers up and running for it apparently.  Perhaps some kind of future event we can hold, when people come here more than once a year to get the invite lol.

I'm about 15 min north of you Artex.   I still have my old CRTs, lol.

YES!  I just installed it from Steam - lots of fun!  How funny is it that you're so close!  Which CRTs do you own??

I have 2 19" Medion and a 19" Mag CRT monitor yet in my basement.  Worked the last time i used them, but that was.... 7ish years ago or so.
